Plan B's Listen Back: Kim Buckley Talks Having A Sustainable Christmas

Sustainable Christmas It seems like everyone is talking about having a sustainable Christmas. At a time when a lot of us go all-out, what does a sustainable Christmas look like and how easy can it be? Reporter Kim Buckley told Sarina on Saturday’s Plan B that small changes can have big impacts on the environment. Christmas Trees It might be too late for this year but when you're choosing your tree, a real tree is better for the environment than a fake one. If you do need to have a plastic tree, Kim suggests investing in a high-quality tree that will last a number of years. Food Waste We all know that food is a big part of Christmas but do you really need it all? Every year, a lot of us will end up having tons of food go to waste. You might want to say 'Let's go mad, it's Christmas,' but Kim suggests buying only what you need. Presents Instead of buying single use presents, why not give the gift of experiences? Tickets to a gig, restaurant vouchers and a night out in the cinema are all great gifts that you can give to anyone. As a bonus, you may even be brought along as the plus one. If you want to give a physical gift, you can still think sustainable. Keep cups and reusable water bottles are a great way to encourage improving habits. Importantly, remember to shop local and try to support small businesses. Gift wrapping Wrapping presents is a great time to get creative. Most wrapping paper is not recyclable due to the shiny foil. Instead you can use newspaper, plain paper that you can decorate yourself or even wrap the present in another present like a cloth bag. For more great tips on how you can be sustainable this Christmas, listen below.
